Imagine having to carry gallons of water for several kilometers to use for washing, boiling and rinsing your laundry! That’s what people used to do in the past! The process could take an entire day, let alone drying and ironing. The amount of effort put into laundry made warm soapy water so precious it had to be reused!
Although invented in 1908, the first electric washing machine did not commercially spread immediately among households. It surely is one the greatest inventions of the time. Nowadays, we have a choice between multiple manufacturers, loading options and multiple cycle options as well as many other features. You now can choose the colour and design. There are even washing machines you can control remotely with your smart phone and ones that automatically order detergent for you if you’re running low!
The advance in technology brought up some questions, too. The choice between cold and warm wash is often one of them. Warm washing has its benefits, but in this blog, we have some good reasons you should consider washing in cold water whenever possible.
1) Hot water can be rough on clothes
Washing in hot water can cause colour to wash out or fade. Heat is also likely to cause shrinkage with certain fibres. Thus, if you wash clothes in cold water, they are more likely to retain their size and shape better - and the colours can last longer. Also, hot water can cause some stains, like blood or perspiration, to set permanently in the fibre.
2) Cold wash is budget friendly
About 75%-90% of the total energy used for the wash goes only towards heating the water. Switching to a cold wash may come with some major energy savings.
3) Cold wash is more sustainable
Yes, the major concern here is the fact that energy is generated by non-renewable sources. However, environmental impact is not limited to this. Another significant problem lies in tiny particles called microfibres. They shed from synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon (especially during hot water cycles) into the water and end up in the oceans or our drinking water supply. These small plastic pollutants cannot be filtered and can be mistaken for food by ocean organism. Overall, the microfibres contribute up to 35% of all plastic pollution in the global water system.
