The new kid in the market scene is the Avenida Food Hall & Fresh Market which opened in December 2018 at the Avenida Place Shopping Centre.
More of a food hall than a market, the young arrival offers quality artisan foods made locally. It also has a few fresh organic produce vendors and organic meat/poultry products.
A Food Hall, you ask? Yes. A Food Hall is a European concept were in its infancy food vendors, butcher shops and artisan restaurants were a part of a department store. It differs from food courts in malls that offer foods mostly from fast-food chains. It also differs from markets that have more produce than ready-made foods. The idea has been adopted by some North American cities such as New York, Boston, Montreal, and now in Calgary.
From Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Calgarians can experience cuisines international – Mexican, Thai, Italian, Indian, Ethiopian, Ukrainian and so much more – as well as various hard to resist desserts
We’ve had the pleasure of a visit to this urbane food hall and tasted a couple of fares. It is worth many more visits to try more of what it offers. There is something for everyone, including gluten-free choices.
