What’s the single most important thing to consider when you’re choosing a refrigerator? Find out in this video as Product Expert David Bouwman gives CTV’s Marke Driesschen tips for buying a fridge.
Transcript:Marke: Cold glass of water, cold glass of ice. Most fridges provide that these days, but they provide so much more, and our friend David is here to tell us about fridges and how they’ve developed and advanced over the years too. But the number one thing you’ve got to bring in before is where is it going to fit, right? That’s a vital piece of information.
David: Absolutely. It is the number one thing, because refrigerators nowadays have gotten taller, wider and in many cases deeper, so for an older home, you really need to know the space. Not just the size of your actually existing fridge, but the space. And then from there, because there are so many choices, we’ll basically narrow down what’s going to fit for you.
Marke: Yeah exactly. This is a KitchenAid, and a real good example of just how technology has helped too. You’ve got lots of space, right?
David: Huge.
Marke: Freezer’s always on the bottom, right?
David: Yeah, tons of space. I mean, certain things in this fridge – now, this thing also scrubs out ethylene gas, so things like apples would give out ethylene gas, really cause things to go bad quicker in your fridge. So that actually scrubs that out.
Marke: Now my old fridge, I’m always guessing about temperature control, right? The old slide rule: where is it? Is it 6, is it 2, is it 8? This is a no-brainer, right?
David: It is. It’s really selecting what you want. And especially for something like this is going to be ideal, especially for your meat and fish ‘cause you’re able to hold it at that temperature of 0, just a bit -1, so for longevity, up to 3, 4 days, not a problem with something like this.
Marke: Yeah, exactly. A lot of these models too have gotten a lot better at energy efficiency and things like that.
David: Yes, absolutely. A lot of these fridges do qualify for – a lot of these are Energy Star, so from BC Hydro you can get a rebate for buying a higher quality EnergyStar fridge.
Marke: Right, as far as maintenance of your fridge, once you get it new, keep it up?
David: Yeah, you know what? Take it out, vacuum underneath once in a while, but there’s no evaporator coils in the back of these fridges anymore, so they’re basically just flat. So there’s none of that maintenance that used to be involved with the older fridges.
Marke: And you know what else I like? They’re on wheels. They’re easier to move these days!
David: Yeah, a lot easier to move in and out, absolutely.
Marke: Great. Thanks David.
David: You’re welcome.
