How to Use the Broil Function

Although many ovens have two different cooking functions, the ‘Bake’ function is widely thought of as the only one that has any practical use. After all, what does ‘Broil’ even do?

The ‘Broil’ function in your oven is very similar to an upside-down grill. Just like a grill, very high heat quickly sears or cooks the outside of food without thoroughly permeating the inside. This cooking method is best used on cuts of meat such as steak, or vegetables you would normally place on a grill. Additionally, it can make a great compliment to the ‘Bake’ function by adding a crisp finishing touch to any dish.

Here are a few tips to best utilize your oven’s ‘Broil’ function:

Every ‘Broil’ function is different. Since many only have the option to turn “On” or “Off” (sometimes referred to as “High” and “Low”), many ovens have a different go-to broiling temperature. Also, the distance between the oven rack and upper heating element can make a difference. Be mindful when you broil for the first time and learn what works for your oven. We recommend checking your oven’s user manual to see optimum distance between the rack and element.

With high heat comes quick cooking times. Be sure to check on your food every few minutes or risk your food burning! If you have an oven light, keep it on as a reminder to see what is happening.

When cooking meat make sure the cuts are not too thick. Thicker steaks, pork chops, or fish can be scorched on the outside before they are cooked properly on the inside. This is an instance when a combination baking/broiling might come in handy.

You can view our wide selection of Broil-ready cooking appliances in our Product Catalogue.
