As summer comes to an end, fall sports are coming into season. If you or a family member participates in soccer, ice hockey or football, sweaty clothing is expected. And you probably want to wash these dirty garments as quickly and efficiently as you can – before they stink up your trunk.
Whether you’re a rookie in your first year of clothes-washing or a seasoned veteran, here are some great tips and tricks to improve the way you do laundry:
More detergent doesn’t mean a better clean. Most of British Columbia has “soft water,” which has a low mineral content that easily creates suds from your laundry detergent. Many detergents are made for harder water that does not easily create suds. Try using only half the recommended amount of detergent to leave your clothes cleaner and with less soap residue.
If you own a front-load washer, be sure to fill it according to textile types. Pack your front-load laundry when washing cotton fabrics as they shrink when they absorb water. Fill your load only 3/4 full for polyester clothes as synthetic materials maintain their sizes.
Don’t underestimate the importance of separating fabrics when putting them in the dryer. Cotton dries at a different speed than wool, polyester and other synthetics. Drying multiple fabric types in a single dryer load creates static in clothing.
