<p>When you are trying to eat healthier it usually comes down to keeping things simple.  Here are some hints on how to cook healthy food while keeping it delicious.</p> <p><strong>Fresh raw vegetables, whole grains and lean meats</strong>. Looks and sounds simple but turning these ingredients into something that is nutritious, low fat and high in fibre, but is still tasty, is actually quite simple. All of this depends on you and your family's likes and dislikes, there are a lot of ingredients to choose from, so explore your palate and experiment with some new recipes and foods.</p> <p><strong>Different methods of cooking</strong>. There are many methods to cook food with little to no extra fats or oils; such as steaming, roasting, baking, braising, stewing and grilling.</p> <p><em>Chef's Tip #1<strong>:</strong></em> Try steaming your vegetables and using a squeeze of lemon juice on them instead of salt or butter. Take a piece of fish, perhaps salmon, and steam it on top of fresh herbs like thyme, dill or basil on a slice of lemon.</p> <p><strong>Comfort food can be quite healthy too.</strong> Stewed beef with wild mushrooms or even vegetarian chilli is a healthier choice.</p> <p><strong> </strong><em>Chef’s Tip #2:</em>  Fresh herbs such as basil, thyme, oregano, dill, chives, parsley, sage and bay leaves can all add flavour to low-fat foods.</p> <p><strong>Your barbecue can help you maintain your healthy eating habits.</strong> Cedar plank salmon with fresh tarragon and cracked black pepper served with grilled peppers and baked sweet potatoes.</p> <p><em>Chef’s Tip #3:</em> Using fresh-squeezed fruit juices and sometimes the fruit itself (i.e., lemon, lime and orange) can be a great way to add flavour to food.</p> <p>With all the choices we have at our grocery stores, sticking to the fresh foods and lean fresh meats you will find that you can eliminate a lot of fat, salt and food additives from your diet and go along way to healthier you!</p>
