MarkeWashers, dryers, refrigerators—they use up a lot of energy. Drew, you’re going to show us that there’s energy-efficient models but there are other ways that you can be more efficient too, right?
DrewAbsolutely. You’re seeing the Energy Star logo is very prevalent in the marketplace now; a lot of things are Energy Star. But there are also things you can do to make Energy Star that much better.Use your cold wash—all your detergents are made to activate with cold water. If you use cold water, you’re not charging up the hot water heater to get the hot water.Over here with your dryer, there are certain things like eco-boost that you can put on as well that will prolong the drying time but reduce the heat. I go old-school—something my mom taught me and my grandmother taught her—put a nice bulky, dry towel in with a wet load. That brings your drying time down significantly.
MarkePerfect, okay. And here’s the other culprit—the refrigerator.
DrewThe refrigerator. So with your refrigerator, one thing you want to look for—check your gaskets, make sure they are not dried out or cracked. Also, stop your teenagers from standing in front of the fridge for 10 minutes with the door open, saying that you’ve got no food in there to eat.Secondly, the freezer—a lot of people have a secondary freezer in their home so they end up not having anything in this freezer. Now we are working super hard to cool an empty cavity whereas if it’s packed in there, there’s not as much air to cool. So use the freezer.
MarkeUse the freezer, keep it well stocked. And as your mother and grandmother used to say, close the fridge door too!
DrewAbsolutely.
MarkeThanks, Drew.
