Ahh, imagine one of those warm beautiful summer nights that are made for sitting outside with a cold drink in your hand. You’re enjoying the wonderful temperatures, watching the sun slowly set while you grin; knowing this can be done all over again tomorrow.
If only you could sit still for one moment, without swinging your hands up in the air trying to shoo those pesky bugs away or getting stung by them. Mosquitoes, wasps, bees, flies, you name it. As if they’re all there on a mission to drive us back inside the house. Now, unless you fancy unnecessary stings and corny dance moves, we have a few ideas for you to naturally combat the little bugs without killing them or harming the environment.
Mother Nature seems to have our back– as usual. With a bit of planning, you could have a backyard featuring plants that are not only a beautiful addition to your garden but also help with your battles against bugs. Herbs such as basil, lavender, lemongrass, catnip, lemon thyme, mint, rosemary are all a great addition to your outdoor beauty. The essential oils in these plants are natural insect repellents. You could even use them when cooking. A complete win-win!
Looking for a more blooming garden that would help with flies? Plants like alliums, chrysanthemums, marigolds and the colourful petunias may help too.
No green thumb? No backyard? No problem. If you’re spending time outdoors and those bugs just love hanging out too close to you, try essential oils. A few drops of lavender, peppermint, tea tree or citronella essential oils combined into a carrier oil or into your favourite lotion, then put on exposed skin may help in a natural, non-chemical way to intimidate those little creatures.
