Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a natural process of water filtration that removes contaminants from water as it’s dispensed. Reverse Osmosis does not require any chemical or electrical treatment. This water filtration process is a four-step method, travelling through a pre-filter, RO membrane, storage tank, and post-filter.
*The following reverse osmosis method is specific to the Kinetico Drinking Water System
How Reverse Osmosis water systems work
Pre-Filter
Unfiltered water goes through pre-filter, which removes larger particles, chlorine and other chemicals. After going through the pre-filter, the water then travels into the RO Membrane.
The Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane
As water is dispensed, pressure within the piping pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane (a barrier that has very tiny holes just large enough for water molecules) and out of the tap. This membrane is able to stop larger minerals, and chemicals. Now, having gone through the reverse osmosis treatment, the filtered water travels into a storage tank.
Storage Tank
The storage tank is where treated water is stored until it is needed. Once there is a demand, treated water is released and goes into the final filter – the post-filter. In the K5 Drinking Water System, the storage tank is able to store more than 40 gallons of filtered water per day.
Post-Filter
Although the water is already filtered and ready to be used at this point, the Post-Filter is the cherry on top that gets rid of any unpleasant tastes and odours which may have remained.
